Visa Category

There are many Visa categories under which you can travel to India, and it is important to apply for the right category of visa, depending upon the purpose of your visit, as described below:

BUSINESS VISA

PURPOSE: Meetings with companies in India; meetings, sales or exhibiting products and services on behalf of a company outside India.

TRANSFER OF BUSINESS VISA

PURPOSE: Transfer the remaining duration of valid business visa to a new passport.

TRANSFER OF TOURIST VISA

PURPOSE: Transfer the remaining duration of valid tourist visa to a new passport.

EMPLOYMENT VISA (US National)

PURPOSE: Employment in India for contracts, training, skilled services as consultants, installation, commissioning, projects, etc.

MEDICAL VISA

PURPOSE: For treatment in reputed and recognized hospitals and treatment centers in India.

MEDICAL ATTENDANT VISA

PURPOSE: For blood relatives of a patient accompanying the patient for treatment in India.

MISSIONARY VISA

PURPOSE: For persons coming to join a foreign Missionary organization in India, approved by the Government of India, not involving proselytization.

TRANSIT VISA

PURPOSE: In transit in India to reach the ultimate destination.

EMERGENCY SERVICE VISA

PURPOSE: This Visa is meant for a US Passport holder of Indian Origin traveling to India on medical grounds such as incidents of loss of life, accident or serious illness of parents, children or nearest relatives, or to attend to your legal matters in India.

ENTRY VISA

PURPOSE: This Visa is meant for a Person of Indian Origin, spouse or a child of a Person of Indian Origin, dependent family members of holders of Employment Visa or Research Visa. This Visa is also meant for a person if the purpose of visit to India does not match any other type of visa.

TRANSFER OF ENTRY VISA

PURPOSE: Transfer the remaining duration of a valid entry visa to a new passport.

VISITOR VISA (Pakistan Nationals)

PURPOSE: for Pakistan Passport holders who have not renounced their Pakistan Citizenship.

TOURIST VISA

PURPOSE: Tourism in India for recreation, sightseeing, casual visit to meet friends and relatives etc.

CONFERENCE VISA

PURPOSE: for attending International Conferences, Seminars or Workshops.

STUDENT VISA

PURPOSE: For bona fide students who wish to pursue regular studies in recognized educational institutions in India.

JOURNALIST VISA

PURPOSE: For professional journalists and photographers for up to three months stay in India. All foreign journalists must apply for a 'J' (Journalist) Visa, regardless of whether they are travelling for tourism or journalism.

Journalists or intern journalists who intend to work in Indian media organizations should apply for Employment Visa.

Crew members traveling to India for documentary filming and cleared by the Indian Embassy or Consulate with a receipt of No Objection and customs permit, should apply for a Journalist Visa.

Crew members cleared by the Information & Broadcasting Ministry to produce feature films, reality shows, and commercial TV serials should apply for a Business Visa.
